With the introduction of geometry-describing 3D CAD models, the world of technical documentation has changed. In addition to the classic 2D drawing, the 3D model has adopted the geometric product description. However, this resulted in two co-existing sources of information that must be kept in sync at great effort (Model-Centric Design).
The desire for a single source of reliable data providing all information needed to manufacture a product is perfectly understandable and has evolved under the term of Model-Based-Definition (MBD). It also can be seen as moving product and manufacturing information (PMI) from the traditional 2D drawing into the 3D model, replacing the drawing.
The integration of this approach into the much broader number of business processes is referred to as Model-Based-Enterprise (MBE).
The model-based approach significantly increases the information content and quality of the 3D model and makes it even more suitable for further automation of downstream processes.
The implementation of MBD/MBE may initially challenge companies the one or the other way, before the full potential will be achieved.
