Sought-after MBD expertise

Some weeks ago PTC broadcasted worldwide a MBD event called “Planning Your Model Based Journey“. Jan Stothfang was asked to join the discussion panel and to share his experience about Model-Based-Definition along with two other experts. An experienced moderator guided the panelists through a pool of questions. They ranged from the distinction between MBD and MBE, to issues encountered during implementation and the significance of GD&T within a 3D model.

In the course of the discussion, it became clear that for a successful MBD initiative it is not enough to simply move all information from the traditional 2D drawing to the 3D model. Rather, one should conduct a comprehensive analysis of the consumers of the information to properly set project expectations and detect inconsistencies before the project starts.

Another discussion point dealt with the importance of the authors of the annotated 3D models. Successful MBD initiatives must include a strategy to relieve designers from repetitive tasks instead of overloading them with additional topics. In this context, databases for standard text selection, template management or color coding of surfaces were mentioned.
