Using the option LATERAL_KEEPOUT_DISTANCE

1. September 2022 | Tips & Tricks

Purpose

The option LATERAL_KEEPOUT_DISTANCE defines the lateral keepout area in the X/Y direction around the base, which must remain free of workpiece geometry. This, along with the normal distance D1 set in the blank data file, results in the Z position for the selected base size.

Application

The value of the option can be set in the options dialog on the “Electrode” tab. The default value is 0, which corresponds to the previous behavior of the software.

Workflow

Placing the base using the option happens in the following steps:

  1. Calculation of electrode contour outline.
  2. Automatic selection of the appropriate base size (taking into account the SOLID_CONTOUR_CLEARANCE option).
  3. Creation of the base centered in X/Y direction with a temporary Z position.
Placement of the base with application of the option according to steps 1-3
  4. Optimization of the Z position considering the perpendicular distance D1 and the lateral distance LATERAL_KEEPOUT_DISTANCE. To do this, the size of the base is increased by the doubled option value and checked for collisions with the workpieces.
Placement of the base with application of the option according to step 4
  5. Check and second optimization of the calculated position when using a blank with a free dimension.

Availability

The option LATERAL_KEEPOUT_DISTANCE is available starting with SMARTElectrode 15.0.0.0, 14.1.0.0, 13.1.0.0, and 12.1.0.0 in Creo versions 4.0 through 9.0.
